Air Canada Express: Is Economy on the CRJ900 Worth the Squeeze? (YVR to San Diego)

Air Canada Express CRJ 900: A Convenient Hop from Vancouver to San Diego
As travel restrictions ease, Air Canada has reinstated routes, including the Vancouver (YVR) to San Diego (SAN) flight operated by Air Canada Express using the Bombardier CRJ 900. This review, updated for 2024, reflects a recent experience on this route.
One of the biggest perks for Star Alliance Gold members flying this route, even in Economy, is access to Air Canada's Maple Leaf Lounge in Vancouver. While perhaps smaller than the international lounges, it offers a welcome respite with hot food options and an open bar.
The CRJ 900 features 12 Business Class seats in a 1x2 configuration and 64 Economy seats in a 2x2 layout. While the windows may not be as large or clear as those on Embraer aircraft, the 31-inch seat pitch in Economy is acceptable. For a small fee, passengers can select seats with potentially more legroom in the front rows or exit rows.
The in-flight entertainment (IFE) system is a highlight, offering a selection of movies, television shows, and music. While the screen resolution and responsiveness may vary depending on the aircraft's age, it provides a valuable distraction on the approximately 2.5-hour flight. Basic internet access is available, though not high-speed.
While the CRJ 900 may not be as spacious as larger mainline jets or Embraer aircraft, the convenience of a non-stop flight, combined with lounge access and in-flight entertainment, makes this a worthwhile option for travel between Vancouver and San Diego. The friendly service from the flight attendants further enhances the experience.
